Jackson Government Moves Some Offices into Metrocenter–A Sign that Jackson is Resurging?

20 Year Deal Set by Ailing Metrocenter and City

My thoughts:

It's sad the people of Jackson think the government will save them and "rebuild" Jackson. All government can do is take from the producers and make malinvestments with their money. It has been very interesting watching the deterioration of the city over the last few decades.

The more people clamor for the government to do something, the faster the city sinks down and the faster the producers leave the city. Each time government steps in, like by occupying Metrocenter, this is not a victory for Jackson or a sign the city is making a resurgence. This is just further evidence that the city is dying and government is struggling to keep up its facade of benevolence.

Here’s an example of the blind faith in government:

There is always one thing for certain with some of you: Any mention of anything good happening in Jackson brings out all of the haters and naysayers. The same thing was said about the Medical Mall.

I, for one, am pleased with this decision, which will benefit a lot of people. Most of you who are responding are probably not from Jackson. You simply hate the thought of Jackson flourishing and taking its rightful position as the BEST OF THE NEW SOUTH. Mayor Johnson and the City Council should be applauded for any effort expended toward the revitalization of the City of Jackson.

For those of us who have chosen to remain and who love our City, we invite those of you who took the "flight out" to consider making Jackson your place of residence! Watch us as we continue to build and grow. The distance to that dream realization is much shorter than it has been. We will continue to revitalize, rejuvenate and renovate every lumpy bump in that MetroCenter Parking lot!

It is possible that the prevalence of large corporations is an unintended consequence of government intervention. Coase said the firm is a means of reducing transaction costs. Various interventions such as taxes and regulations increase transaction costs and make larger firms more efficient.

Trade, Not Sanctions for Libya

Looks like most of the oil flowing out of Libya right now is from the eastern part of the country, and not in the control of Gaddafi.

Rajab Sahnoun, an official with the Arabian Gulf Oil Co., said a tanker bound for China with capacity for one million barrels was being loaded at Tobruk. An Italy-bound tanker is also waiting to begin loading in the coming days, he said.

"The terminal is working at 100 percent," Sahnoun told The Associated Press.

Another Agoco official, Ali Faraj, said a pipeline connecting the port to the eastern oilfields of Sarir and Misla was operating normally. The company's production of around 220,000 barrels a day had been largely unaffected, Faraj said.

European Union Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger said Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who is struggling to contain a popular uprising that threatens to sweep him from power, had lost control of most of the country's oil and gas fields.

Many facilities were now controlled by regional families or provisional regional leaders opposed to Gaddafi's authority, Oettinger told a meeting of EU energy ministers.

"They have taken over control, they have taken away control from Gaddafi," he said.

House Passes Patriot Act Extension–Now to Senate

The House of Representatives have passed a bill to extend provisions of the Patriot Act 275-144.  Mississippi’s representatives voted as follows:

Gregg Harper(R) voted FOR the extension.
Alan Nunnelee(R) voted FOR the extension.
Palazzo(R) voted FOR the extension.

Bennie Thompson voted AGAINST it.

Now Rand Paul, a man who was criticized by Democrats for being a racist hell bent on taking back his country seems to be the most vociferous opponent of the act in the Senate.
